Who we are and what we do...

Outdoor Explorations is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing people of all abilities with opportunities to participate in adventure recreation.

Programs are available for individuals, groups, and corporate clients. Our staff works with committed volunteers to help participants discover the possibility of having the outdoors and healthy adventure recreation be a part of their lives. People achieve significant personal growth and develop positive social relationships through their participation.

Philosophy
We believe everyone should get outside and enjoy healthy activities as often as possible. People with disabilities are often precluded from these options because of financial or access barriers. We eliminate these barriers.

  • We believe all people, regardless of ability, age, economic, or cultural differences, can live, grow, work, and learn together.
  • We believe that adventure activities within community settings provide a vehicle for self-discovery and personal transformation.
  • We believe that adventure education can be a catalyst for improving social conditions by breaking down barriers within communities.
  • We believe that knowledge of and participation with the outdoors builds ownership and encourages responsibility for the natural environment
History
Carolyn Bess, the founder of Outdoor Explorations, knew that outdoor experiences are basic to the human spirit and was determined to provide people with disabilities this opportunity. While working at a shared living community, Carolyn organized a backpacking excursion to the Berkshire Mountains in 1991. The trip was a success, having a lasting impact on everyone involved. As the demand for additional trips grew, Outdoor Explorations was born. Since that time Outdoor Explorations has continued to serve hundreds of children and adults with disabilities each year and has grown into a long standing community organization serving the greater Boston area for twenty-one years!
