Organizational History
After completing an amazing journey on the Appalachian Trail, Carolyn Bess, OE founder, became convinced of the transformative power of the outdoors. Upon her return, she felt that such an experience was "basic to the human spirit" and was determined to provide others with a similar opportunity. While working at a shared living community, Carolyn organized a backpacking excursion to the Berkshire Mountains with ten people of all abilities. After six months of planning, the trip proved to be a success, having a lasting impact on everyone involved. As the demand for additional trips grew, Outdoor Explorations was born. Now, more than ten years later, Outdoor Explorations has grown into a vibrant community of more than 2,000 participants and 60 field volunteers invlolved in a broad array of adventure trips service projects, and activity clinics.
Mission
Outdoor Explorations makes the outdoors a welcoming place to people with disabilities. Through our innovative, cooperative, and fun approach, we break down the barriers that prevent people from living life to the fullest. Our adventure programs, training, and community service enable people of all abilities to discover and value their own and others' unique strengths.
Vision
Outdoor Explorations is committed to creating communities where every person's unique strengths and perspectives are valued. We look to the day when all people with disabilities have access to the full range of freedom and opportunity in the world.
  • Inclusion: We believe all people - regardless of ability, age, culture or background - can live, grow and learn together.
  • Personal-growth: We value experiential activities as a vehicle for self-discovery and transformation.
  • Social change: We believe that individuals and organizations can improve social conditions by removing barriers to participation.

"The OE experience was so positive for us. I wish everyone I know could have a chance to experience this incredible adventure."
