Trip Clothing Details are as follows
Dressing for the Weather

As our name implies we'll be outdoors, which means that Mother Nature will have a say. It could be sunny, rainy, windy, snowy, warm, cold, or hot and we all need to be prepared to be comfortable and safe. Please check the Fact Sheet for specific gear for your program and what you can borrow from OE. While we will send you a packing list specifically geared to your trip, here are some general suggestions.

What to Wear in Cold Weather

Layering works best to trap body heat.
We suggest:
  • Long underwear as a base (poly-pro stays warm when wet and moves moisture and sweat away from the body during intense activity) - not cotton or Duofold cotton/wool
  • Long-sleeved shirt and a scarf of some type with a polarfleece, wool, or flannel overshirt or sweater.
  • Nylon wind pants to wear over the long underwear or, in snowy conditions, insulated snow pants. Layering long underwear, polarfleece pants, and wind pants also works for warmth. Nylon wind pants are fairly inexpensive and readily available.
  • Tall socks, either wool or synthetic. These stay warm when wet and prevent blisters. No cotton socks.
  • Boots or shoes that will keep feet warm and dry. In snowy conditions waterproof boots are required. (OE has some supplies of these. Advance notice is appreciated.)
  • Waterproof or water-resistant gloves or mittens.
  • Waterproof outer jacket to protect from rain or snow.

Hot Weather

The key here is the activity:

Shorts, jeans, and tee shirts for any hiking, camping, or "on the ground" activities.

Sneakers or lightweight boots are mandatory. No sandals or open-toed shoes.

A ball cap or any hat with a brim for sun protection and sunglasses for eye protection are a good idea.

For water sports (kayaking, canoeing) it is important to dress for the water NOT the day! We live in New England and our water can always be a lot colder than the air.

We suggest:
  • Closed toed water shoes (OE has supplies of these)
  • T-shirts, baggy shorts, or lightweight baggy wind-type pants
  • Brimmed hat or ball cap and sunglasses with a safety strap
team work

"We learned that we can do things that other families do. Since our trip with OE last year, we have tried camping on our own, something we never thought possible."
